Swimming is another great way to help ease the pain. If you have access to a public pool or if you own one, this is a very natural way of soothing acute back pain. You may also try the "Fake Swim" on dry land. Lie on your stomach and raise your left arm and your right leg. Hold for 1 second and then alternate. This will help strengthen your lower back muscles and rid the acute pain.

Some tips to help prevent Edema
● a low-salt diet.
● Avoid drinking too many fluids.
● If you are overweight or obese lose weight.
● Elevate your legs above the level of your heart to keep swelling down and improve blood flow.
● If your ankles and feet are swollen during pregnancy, keep your legs elevated, and lie on your side rather than your back.
● When you do lie down, place a pillow under your legs.
● Wear support or compression stockings to improve the flow of blood through the veins.
● Avoid leg swelling on long trips by standing up and walking around often.
● Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

I like your list of treatments available. The most intriguing is the snake/bee venom. I couldn't imagine how that could be helpful, but I suppose it may in the right controlled environment. I'll have to tell that one to my friends if they start complaining about arthritis.

Good information, but I didn't quite understand where you were going with the SMT and medication stuff. I am a chiropractor in Reno, NV and I know and have seen first hand the benefits of SMT or Adjustments as most of us call them. Eliminating or preventing low back pain can really be as simple as maintaining a healthy weight for your body type, eating enough fruits/vegetables, drinking plenty of water, getting plenty of rest, a regular exercising/stretching routing, and visiting your chiropractor on occasion to insure that your spine is properly aligned.

VIGOROUS MASSAGE IS THE WAY TO GO -

Its simple, in order to obtain pain relief from chronic painful conditions a vigorous massage is the best way to go. massage.

The reason for this is that when your nerve sensors feel the new, strong sensations coming from the vigorous massage, they forget all about the old chronic body pain sensations.

The best part is results are almost felt immediately during the massage and last long term for days if not weeks.

While the claims are anecdotal, that doesn't change their validity.

I have had patients report great improvement with magnets. However I remain concerned about an issue that nobody has been able to address to my satisfaction.

Magnets for short term usage are probably fine, it is long term use that I wonder about. There have been several different cases citing the proximity of power lines to increased rates of certain types of cancers. The only reason I can see would be the magnetic field generated at a right angle to the flow of the power through the lines.

My concern is that there would be no difference between proximity to power lines and long term exposure to the field generated by "therapeutic" magnets.

For chronic back issues, I would stick with chiropractic and exercise.

Great stuff.. I also am a Chiropractor. Have helped people with headaches for over 20 years.

For a quick fix, IF YOU CAN HANDLE IT, exercise. Common and classic migraines can at times be broken by working up a bit of a sweat on a elliptical trainer or a bike. It is not a treatment for the problem but it can give you some relief.

Honestly, I have found that primary headaches come from so many different causes. Picking ONE approach to fix them all simply doesn't work. In my office, we do get excellent results but we incorporate several different things in our treatment.

A good chiropractor will evaluate primary headaches and might be just the thing to help you get rid of them.

I agree with you Dr. Croxford. However, I will tell you from my experience, more severe cases do respond to decompression (I use a different machine but same general principles apply). Several of my patients have multiple herniations and while they may not ever achieve the results you have experienced personally, across the board they almost always report a significant improvement in their symptoms. I integrate chiropractic, PT and functional training into my program as well and feel that provides better results in the long run.
Reasonable expectations are important, but getting 80% relief is better than relying on pain medication for the rest of your life.
There usually is some follow up recommended but with herniated disc patients, it is sort of foolish to not provide supportive care of some type. Better to keep the situation in check than to wait for it to act up again.
